Kedarnath - Kedar is another name of Lord Shiva the protector and the destroyer. Lord Shiva, is considered the embodiment of all passions-love, hatred, fear, death and mysticism which are expressed through his various forms.

Kedarnath range stands one of the twelve ' Jyotirlingas' of Kedar or Lord shiva. Kedarnath is one of the 4 Char Dham Hindu pilgrim centers in Uttarakhand, India.

At an altitude of 3.581 mts above sea level on the head of river Mandakini, the shrine of Kedarnath is amongst the holiest pilgrimage for the Hindus.

The origin of temple can be found in the great epic - Mahabharata.

Visit time : - May - October, except Monsoon.

Kedarnath is approachable on foot from Gaurikund, i.e.connected by road to Rishikesh, Kotdwar, Dehradun, Haridwar and other important hill stations of Garhwal and Kumaon region.

About Kedarnath Temple

The Pandavas sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to atone their sins after the battle of Mahabharata. Lord Shiva eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull.

Being followed HE dived into the ground, leaving behind HIS hump on the ground surface.
This conical protrusion is worshipped as the idol on the shrine.

Other four portions of Lord Shiva are worshipped at four places
i) The arms (bahu) at Tungnath
ii) Mouth (mukha) at Rudranath
iii) Naval (nabhi) at Madmaheshwar
iv) Hair (jata) at Kalpeshwar.

Together with Kedarnath, these places are known as the panch Kedar.

Near to the shrine lies Adi Shankaracharya's Samadhi. Its believed to have taken rest after establishing the four dhams at an early age of 32 years. Distance from the shrine also lies an ancient Bhairav Temple, beyond which one comes out to green glades and tiny streams, fed by the surrounding (and approachable) glaciers.
